As someone who has dealt with and researched my own apnea for the past ten years, I can relate and would definitely say that this sounds like it could be apnea.
When one stops breathing may people wake up with their heart pounding. Anxiety (during sleep or during the day) is another huge sign.
In any event, a sleep study needs to be conducted. Some sleep labs (if at a hospital) will give you an Ambien to help you sleep. If it's not at a hospital, you may need to get a few Ambien pills from your doctor before hand. You can also try Benadryl or Tylenol PM, etc. I wouldn't let the fear that you won't be able to sleep stop you from scheduling a much needed study. Just plan ahead with a sleep aid.
As far as getting a sleep study scheduled, your psychiatrist/psychologist cannot prescribe a sleep study. I'm not even sure that your primary care physician will be able to; they may need to refer you to an ear, nose and throat doctor or pulmonologist.
Get on it!
