If you have sleep apnea you can be so sleep deprived that when you fall asleep you go directly or very quicky into REM sleep. The deeper your sleep the more severe your apneas - and yes, when you wake up after an hour you have probably been woken up from a very deep sleep and not only are you startled you are struggling for air. I have had this happen to me and it is truly frightening - the strange thing that I noticed was the more relaxed I was before I went to sleep the better chance I had of having an event... my guess is that because I was relaxed and exhausted I slept deeper -- get yourself a sleep study... and then plan a course of action. CPAP is not easy, but the quality of life that you can regain is worth it.
