Worried about upcoming test

Posted by dunetraveller on June 01, 2007 at 00:10:42:

Hello. I have been doing my share of reading on the forum and other sites to know as much as I can about OSA. From what I have been told (way too many times for too many years for me to keep denying it) I snore like a freight train; loud enough to wake people up through multiple closed doors. That, and I stop breathing, but no info on duration and frequency... just that I do it/have done it.

I finally got concerned enough to ask my doctor about it and my polysomnography has been scheduled. In the mean time I have been doing everything I can to help with the snoring and was told I snore even lying on my stomach!? Oy! I kinda gave up hope, but kept on sleeping on my side/stomach. Then I was told I wasn't snoring anymore. I wasn't sleeping either. I just kind of get to this in-between "out of it" state where I think I'm sleeping but not (like meditation is the best way I can describe it). I just toss and turn to stay comfortable. I think some nights I must have slept because I don't remember being awake the whole time, but my fiancée can tell I wasn't sleeping on those occasions either (probably from the tossing and turning more than normal).

This has been going on for almost two weeks now and I am worried that come time for the test I still won't be sleeping (or snoring) and I'll just be diagnosed/treated for insomnia since I won't have any possible apneas if I won't fall asleep. Is it normal for this to happen? and how can I best explain this so the testers won't think I'm a loon? I hate to pray for the snoring to come back, but if I can't sleep fully how will they be able see if there is a problem? I hear that many people have difficulty falling asleep during the test from being in a foreign place so there ought to be retests for those people, but maybe that's difficult? not sure :-S

John
