When I was researching what my insurance required in order to approve a sleep study, basically what it said was that the MSLT could be done if the polysomnography did not show the presence of OSA. Also, the paperwork from the sleep clinic that my doctor had to fill out for the referral asked if she wanted the MSLT done if warranted by the results of the polysomnography. That would lead me to believe that it's standard to wait until the results of the apnea portion of the test are done to determine of MSLT is needed.
Secondly, I went into this whole thing certain that I had narcolepsy. I was really surprised to find upon further research that many of the symptoms are the same, so I'd much rather take the results of my PSG (moderate apnea), and try the CPAP first before committing myself to a lifetime of rather unpleasant and possibly dangerous and addictive medication.
Finally, I agree with you on your concern that the test results may not be reliable. I would have had the same concern. My suggestion, if you haven't done so already, would be to schedule an appointment with the sleep doctor (not techs, the doctor who interpreted the results and made the diagnosis), and ask him/her to explain how the diagnosis was made and whether your cold symptoms could have influenced the results. My concern would be that the tech may not have fully informed the doctor as to your symptoms during the test (assuming the doctor was not present), so he/she might not have all the information needed to make a proper diagnosis.
Good luck!
