John,

Don't worry. I agree that if you have any trouble sleeping, you should take medication. The medication will make you sleep. This happened to me during my split night PSG test. The good thing is that if you sleep even for a small amount of time, e.g. one hour or so, that is enough for them. They have very high tech equipment which will analyse your brainwave activity and your breathing. Possibly, they will be videotaping (using an infrared type "night lens"). They will be able to correlate what stage of sleep you are in at a given point in time with how much apnea and snoring. They will also know if at that point in time, you are sleeping on your back, on your side, on your stomach etc.

Some things you can do before you go there: Set your alarm an hour early the previous day. Make yourself tired. Try to relax as much as possible. Go for a run or do some kind of physical exercise. Try massage therapy (e.g. Thai/Shiatsu style). That increases blood flow to the muscles, and will make you very drowsy. Take a hot bath. Eat a big meal. Try to calm your mind. Whatever the outcome, it will be good for you. If they detect sleep apnea, excellent treatment is available, and you will soon be sleeping much better.
