A BiPAP is a device that delivers 2 different pressures in conjunction with your breathing pattern. You have an Inhale Pressure and an Exhale Pressure. The Inhale pressure is usually (if not always) higher than the Exhale pressure. To give you an example, the pressure setting may be 14 over 10. The inhale pressure is 14, the exhale pressure will be reduced to a 10.

There are many different reasons why the doctor would prescribe this machine. You need to discuss it with your doctor. BiPAP's can be good if you respond well to the therapy. In some of the sleep clinics I've been to, a BiPAP is automatically tried and/or prescribed if your pressure is 14 or higher.

Being prescribed a BiPAP really doesn't mean that your condition has gotten better or worse. It just means that the doctor thinks that a BiPAP would better suit your particular needs based upon the results of a recent sleep study.

What you need to do is talk with your sleep doctor about the results of the sleep study.

I started with CPAP then went to BiPAP, and now I'm using an Auto-PAP. They all have their pros and cons. The particular kind of PAP machine you have is not as important as the results you receive from treatment on the machine. If BiPAP doesn't work for you, be sure to tell your doctor.

Don't be nervous.
