You are likely over your cold, but your best answer would be to get a medication to thin out the mucous and allow your body to expel it easier. I have allergies and am prescribed Guifenesin for this purpose since I normally have post nasal drip that can be quite annoying if I didn't have this help dry it up. I have to thank my doc, as I would never have thought of it on my own. It is sold over the counter by various names: Mucinex and Robitussin are but two, and there are prescription dosages that may be more effective. With the prescription, you can just get the basic medication without the other stuff they put in OTC medications to convince you that brand Y is better than brand X because it has more kinds of drugs in it. Hopefully if someone else finds themselves in a similar situation, they will be able to avoid the gagging.

As a side note.. I have read of people finding much relief from their plugged up noses once they begin using their xPAP equipment at bedtime. One line of reasoning is that the humidified air provides better opportunities for the cilia to clear the nose by keeping the mucous thin, and reduces or eliminates the swelling of the nasal mucosa, allowing for easier breathing. Nasal Irrigation is also highly recommended to keep the nose clear during a cold, as it too thins out the mucous and prevents it from getting all thick and gunky which may then lead to a full blown sinus infection which will require antibiotics.
