This is not unusual. It is not a symptom of sleep apnea, but is called Catathrenia or "Groaning". Sounds made vary from the leaky beach ball to loud groans and wails that can be quite disturbing to anyone else in the room. It is a Parasomnia. Hope that clears things up a bit. There is no known cure for it, and I am not sure if anyone has been able to find a cause. Hypnosis may work. Doesn't seem to cause abnormal arousals for the groaner, but not so sure for the bed partner ;-)
