There was an oral abstract of a small study given at a conference seeking to determine the worthiness to pursue a fuller, more formal study regarding the use of Ambien to reduce Central Apneas. This was only a preliminary study with a small study group, and needs to be peer reviewed and repeated, but does offer some hope for another solution for Primary Central Sleep Apnea sufferers. Here is a link to the article:

Not only will others have to verify the results, but the long term effects of Ambien in users will have to be addressed for this to be a viable treatment. But if Ambien has this good of an effect on Centrals, then it follows it should perhaps not be used for PSGs to diagnose apnea patients as it could be reducing Centrals during the study that won't be treated if not found.
