Oximetry tests are given to people as a preliminary screening. I was given one i a hospital with a nurse that checked on me each hour on the hour. The test has finger pulse oximetery, plus a probe that went under my nostrils to pick up my breathing. I did this preliminary screening for two nights. On the first night I did not sleep much. In the morning, the doctor calculated that I had been asleep for 8 hrs and had not had much desaturation. He told me that I most likely did not have sleeep apnea. If I wanted to, I could continue for a second night. On the second, I did the same preliminary screening test. I was exhausted because of not sleeping the first night. I slept much more. On the second morning, they found that my oxygen levels were low. They calculated that my AHI was 17. They refered me for a full PSG test. When I took the full PSG test, it showed that my true AHI was 35. This illustrates how deceiving this kind of oximetry test can be. I very nearly was cleared of OSA. Imagine if they had released me on the first night. I would be running around not knowing what was wrong with me, thinking wrongly that it is definately not OSA, because I had been "tested" for that.

I agree with Sleepytimegal. Best to go for the full PSG test to find out definateively if you have OSA. Those premininary oximetery tests are not accurate at all.
