It sounds like an anxiety response has set in. There is a reason for it, it's our body's natural way of dealing with threats. This is serious so deal with it soon.

Definitely take him to a sleep Dr and make sure there isn't an airway problem.

But first, at least try to cut caffeine out, and reduce sugar, and tv/computer, fast music, fighting ninja turtle videos, etc. within 2 hours of bedtime. This might help but it's probably not the root cause.

There could be a food sensitivity. Fairly rare and a lot of hype, but worth checking. Dairy, wheat, dye.

Also, the room should be dark. No blue LEDs or bright clocks, or light coming through the curtains. And limit exposure to compact fluorescent lamps in the evening. These lamps are usually shifted towards the blue and some people are very sensitive to this and it reduces their melatonin production.

Let us know what happens.
