I have read several studies on this. That is my own personal experience, and there are others who also had that experience. Basically, the issue is that by removing the structures at the back of the throat, CPAP works less effectively because the palatal seal is compromised. The patients are more prone to "mouth leak".

There was also a study published by Chinese researchers, in which they compared the amount of mouth leak in traditional UPPP and modified UPPP.
As I recall, these studies tend to conclude that UPPP does make CPAP less effective, but that nevertheless, CPAP still works, albeit less effectively than it would have if the palatal seal had been left intact.

The only other thing to add is that MMA is regarded to be a salvage operation for failed UPPPs. If you have this problem, it might be worth investigating.
