I also live in the Los Angeles area and yes, you are missing an essential fact. The increased volume of air generated by the CPAP tends to dry all the nasal membranes to a point of extreme irritation. Many, many people experience severe rhinitis within 2-3 weeks of starting CPAP. Humidified air prevents this problem. Warm air picks up more humidity than cold air. Some people manage without the heat -- some even manage without the humidifier -- but most of us seem to need the heated humidifier. Los Angeles air is very dry at any time of year compared to the Eastern seaboard and other parts of the U.S. Better to have the humidifier and not need it than to go without and find you need to add it later. So many machines have the built-in units which are so nice.
