Connect oxygen to CPAP

Posted by Barto on July 26, 2007 at 21:04:07:

I have used CPAP since 1998. 12cm. Remstar mask with whisper vent swivel. Recently my doctor prescribed supplementary oxygen -3LPM. The technician connected the oxygen tubing to a fitting between the CPAP and the hose. I could feel the airflow out of the swivel on the mask was about 100 times the oxygen flow from the tubing. I took the swivel vent off and rebreathed CO2 was an instant problem. I moved the O2 tube to a fitting on the mask and put the vent swivel back in. That worked pretty well for a while, but My old apnea symptoms started coming back. The therapist with my supplier brought me a full face mask today and I hope that helps.

He connected the O2 back to a fitting on the CPAP machine and said that was correct. 99% of the oxygen is just blowing out the vent in the top of the mask. One study on the internet indicate that supplemental oxygen was supplied via a nasal canula with the tubing through an opening in the face mask. What am I missing here? How should oxygen be connected to a CPAP machine?

Thanks,
Barto
