I agree with D.H.'s observations. I am quite familiar with those calls to United Airlines, and to Air Canada also, trying to explain what CPAP is. I think he is also very correct in his remark that " CPAP users would be too large a piece of the market share to offend". Nevertheless, it is important to bear in mind that sleep apnea is kind of a recent discovery. So, we are the first generation of people to use CPAP on airplanes. People have not gone before us. It will fall to us to hammer out the accomodations that we need. And, we do need them.
My heart goes out to you trying to fly to Sydney without sleep! I have flown several times from Tokyo to North America, and had to break up my journey (of course that entails much higher costs - hotel and stopover rates), due to the airlines unwillingness to accomodate CPAP.
I know full well that on every airline there are up to five percent of people who are using CPAP. That means that one in twenty are inconvenienced. That is a lot of people who are inconvenienced and travelling in unneccessary discomfort.
How keep us posted about your progress on that flight to Sydney.
Thanks for standing up for CPAP users.
