I think that you should exhaust the possiblity of MMA. Save tracheostomy for last. I understand that the trade-off with tracheostomy is that people get colds, pneumonias, etc more easily. Germs have more direct access to your lungs. There is also the lifestyle adjustment. no swimming, taking a shower etc. Nevertheless, I have read accounts that people can live relatively normal lives with tracheostomy. If you read the book "The Promise of Sleep", Dr. Dement makes reference to an individual (I think fellow physician) who had a tracheostomy before MMA was made available, and when offered to close the hole in his neck, he refused the offer. As for me, if MMA does not work, I will not hesitate to opt for tracheostomy. Also, if you examine some of the earlier forums, there were people who had tracheostomies who used to post regularly. I wish they would come back, as it is valuable for us to hear their input.
