I have lived with a trach for the past 10+years for OSA. I have had one cold 10 years ago, no other problems or infections. My trach is open 24/7. Most people with OSA would cap it off during the day and breathe normally then uncap at bed time. Yep, you can't go swimming but you most certainly can shower. Trachs are difficult at first for some people because your body is getting use to a foreign object. However, the coughing usually subsides once your body is use to it. There is some great information in the archeives from the beginning of them on trachs.
Two things to remember about trachs.
1. they could save your life while you loose weight and/or get better fit.
2. they are reversable. If it's not working for you then close it up.
Most people I know that have a trach for OSA would not give it up. It's all in your attitude.
