involuntary deep breaths

just as my husband falls asleep, he is awoken by involuntary deep breaths, i.e. chest movements. this does not happen when a sleeping medication has been taken. while taking a nap during the day, this prohits his ability to sleep. is this a symptom of sleep apnea.
