Both apneas and hypopneas will fragment your sleep by creating emergency partial arousals. In addition, your blood oxygen is never supposed to drop below 90% during sleep and yours dropped to 87%. So whether your sleep is being fragmented and blood oxygen dropping because apneas or hypopneas is not quite as important as the fact that the fragmentation and desaturations are occurring and it is not a good situation.

If you have no symptoms of sleep apnea, what was the reason for the sleep study?

I agree with Captain Cannuck; I think it would be a good idea to get an APAP and monitor your sleep patterns yourself. Some people get wildly different readings on different nights; even sleep study results can vary widely from night to night.
