I recommend you try a 1 or 2 day trip before you commit to 30 days. I fantisized about a romatic trip across country on a train after having read several articles about how wonderful it is, so a few years ago I took AMtrak instead of a plane from Chichago to Boston and back (about 16 hours each way).
It was one of the most horrible experiences in my life !!! ( and this was before CPAP ) ... The trains were all in horrible disrepair, torn, broken, dirty. The staff were impolite and harried. On the way out I was in coach and the bathroom (right in front of me) had a broken door that kept swinging open all night and the toilet didnt work very well so the smell wafted by constantly ... Couldnt sleep a wink. They were out of "Night Cars" so the coach seats didnt have the raised legs. Vast delays put is into boston about 6 hours late. ON the way back I complained enough to get a discount on an upgrade to a sleeper car. That was *slightly* better but even the sleeper car had seen better days. Most of the toilets didnt work, the TV didnt work, the beds were horribly uncomfortable and the noise and shaking of the train, rather then being a calm soothing thing like I remember as a child was jarring. Especially on the top bunk where I had to strap myself in to keep from falling 5 feet due to the sways of the train (atleast 2-3 foot sways were common all night, plus very harsh lights coming in the windows frequently ...
For me, US Train travel has become a "Once in a lifetime experience" .... and the once is over.
I later found that Amtrack is having horrible financial problems and they simply are skipping out on repairs to cut costs. They run the train cars to the ground then ditch them and dont bother fixing anything because they dont have the money. The cars in service are about 30-40 years old and seem to not have had any service in 20.
Maybe your experience will be better ... but I do advise atleast trying a small trip before a large one.
