I don’t think that it’s fully understood. Based on research, you’re supposed to get a certain amount of REM sleep. Therefore, you should assume that you need it, and need it in the quantity indicated by research.

You should note studies have shown that extremely sleep-deprived people spend a disproportionate amount of time in REM sleep when they finally do sleep. This would appear to imply that REM sleep is the most urgently needed stage of sleep.
