I have been chastised in the past on this forum for mentioning this breathing method, but since you are bringing it up I guess it is okay now. I think that any method of deep diaphragmatic breathing can be beneficial. I know that when I do 30 minutes or so of meditation, the smooth muscle in my nasal passages tend to relax and make breathing easier. However, you might want to check out the hyperventilation with a doc. I know that's not much help. Maybe try the buteyko next time you feel short of breath and see if it helps. I think it is usually used as a supplement for asthma.
