Is there a relationship between obstructive sleep apnea and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis?
I realize now that my father suffered from severe obstructive sleep apnea for years and died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
My common sense tells me that the diaphragm pulling on the lungs to get air during an apnea event has to be stressful and wearing on lung alveoli and could result in the breakdown and scarring of lung tissue which is exactly what pulmonary fibrosis is.
Does anybody know if a realtionship exists? We know there is link between heart disease and stroke. A lung issue would not be a great leap.
I have sleep apnea and I am treated, but my brother was extremely frustrated during the testing (we have all been there) and the testing only confirmed his sleep apnea, but he went no further towards treatment. He walked out.
If I can show him a direct link between apnea and pulmonary fibrosis it may get him to act.
If you can point me to scientific articles I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Rolling Thunder
