CPAP Mask & Nocturnal Seizures

Posted by Abby0308 on October 17, 2007 at 12:42:50:

Hi all,

After another sleep study (this one with video monitoring) my doctor has confirmed that I have sleep apnea and nocturnal frontal lobe seizures.

My CPAP has been increased to 9cm of pressure and I was prescribed meds (10mg clobazam aka frisium to start) to help control the seizure activity that occurs during my sleep. After two weeks of not seeing any improvements, I increased my meds to 20mg and continued to use my CPAP nightly. I am still not sleeping well...every night I bolt up in my sleep and experience other symptoms related to the seizures, but I also wake up with my mask pushed up near the bridge of my nose. SO at the moment I am trying to resolve both CPAP issues and seizure issues....UGH!!!

I tend to be a side and stomach sleeper, and my mask dislodges when I roll over onto my stomach or due to the excessive movements I experience in my sleep due to the seizures. During the times when the mask is still on properly, I tend to have to open my mouth in order to overcome the symptoms I experience (racing heart etc). It's odd.

I currently use a Fisher & Paykel Flexifit 407 mask. I was wondering if a full face mask may be a better solution.

Can anyone recommend a full face mask that accomodates both stomach and side sleepers? One that will stay in place as you roll over in your sleep.

I've seen the Resmed Mirage Liberty and the Mirage Quattro masks online and wondered if anyone had any opinions on these full face masks or any others that they have been satisfied with.

I'm going to contact my doctor about the meds, but in the mean time, I wonder if my mask is also contributing to my problems.

Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Abby
