Throat Tickle/Cough on CPAP

Posted by TomB on November 01, 2007 at 06:00:20:

I have a Resmed Autoset heated humidifier using a Swift nasal pillow. Diagnosed with mild OSA 3 months ago. 20 minutes into therapy each night I begin to get a terrible tickle in my throat that leads to coughing, clearing throat etc. Most nights I end up pulling everything off because of this, cough like crazy for the next hour, then settle down and sleep without anything.

Humidity is set at around half. Is this problem a result of too much humidity (i.e. "dry drowning" that I've read about) or too little humidity (i.e. throat too dry)? I don't think it's humidity that's too low as on nights that I manage to keep this on, I encounter a "rain-out" effect about 3-4 in.

Help! Ready to take all this equipment and drop kick it out my window!
