I think if you have high fasting blood sugar levels in the morning you have a blood sugar problem. However, for type 2 diabetics, it is an often observed, not unusual symptom. I had fasting glucose tolerance test (3 hours)with insulin levels taken. It is not something most doctors will order (particularly the insulin levels), they don't think it necessary. I had it at my insistence and was definitely diabetic, got onto metformin pretty quickly, but I wouldn't start to take metformin without getting insulin levels checked (with a 3 hour glucose tolerance test) for a future baseline reference.I am not a medical professional and therefore cannot offer advice, merely sharing my experience. My research has shown that metformin is a very helpful drug to prevent advancing diabetes mellitus to the stage where you have no insulin left and need to supplement it. IF you have a lot of insulin (my case) and it isn't working well to control glucose levels, it is extremely difficult to lose weight or prevent weight gain, as part of insulin's function is energy storage...it's known as the fat storage hormone...any sugar not stored gets stashed as fat. an association with sleep apnea would be obvious in that overwight is associated with sleep apnea...but my own blood sugar problems with extreme hypoglycaemia way predated my weight gain...which post dated my sleep apnea diagnosis and cpap treatment..hope this isn't too much detail or too convoluted to follow. MAIN POINT dont disregard it. Get a blood glucose monitor at the least and test your blood sugar half an hour, an hour and ninety minutes after eating and observe what effect different foods have on your blood glucose levels. I had levels in the diabetic range for 6 nonths before a doctor would take me seriously because I managed it so well that simple glucose fasting tests showed normal for a long while. I seriously limit the quantity of my carbs and am committedly working with an exercise physiologist with resistance training twice a week. aside from metformin its all i know of that really makes a difference to blood sugar levels. If you have a doc that wanted to put you on metformin, I would think you are getting informed advice and I would go back and ask some more questions and request the longer test and strongly request the insulin levels be included at each stage. again I'm not a medic, dealing with my diabetes as well as I can, thanks and good luck to you in figuring out just where on the continuum you are.
