I don't know when my dawn effect began, I only started tracking my blood sugar levels seriously when I had the apnea adequately treated with autopap. I had severe hypoglycaemia for years before that but couldn't get any treatment and information was hard to come by. I may have had it before treatment with autopap, but I was so tired I couldn't function and certainly couldn't monitor my blood sugar levels.
The endocrinologists I have brought it up with more recently after recovering my mental faculties with the cpap working and following up and getting the diabetes diagnosed, have dismissed my concerns about the high early am sugars and say it is a common thing for type 2 diabetics. I am not on insulin, I take metformin and still produce a lot of insulin. If I was taking insulin and waking during the night with a thumping heart, I'd be checking out different types of insulin as a starter. As far as the carb snacks go, they push my blood sugar up almost immediately so I don't have them, instead I eat some walnuts, almonds or other protein which has no effect on my blood sugar level. Good luck with the research and looking forward to reading the feedback when it comes. It seems a lot of us are in the same boat as far as this is concerned.
