I hesitated to respond to this post because I don't use the nasal pillows, only the mask. The mask system is designed for a constant outflow in order, I am told, to wash out the exhaled carbon dioxide. I believe the ability to open one's mouth without the choking sensation is the result of learning to hold the throat muscles in a certain way as I can control it at will. Don't know if this helps. Perhaps your tech can answer your question?
