Should I re-take PSG Test

Posted by MB on February 05, 2008 at 16:15:35:

I got my PSG report back and here are the results:

Male 41 years old
190 lbs
5'7
somewhat dense build

Sleep Efficiency 50.5%
Total Sleep Time 3 hrs
Time in Bed 5.9hrs
Total REM 8 min
Total non REM 2.8 hrs
Total Arousals 58
Total Awakenings 23
Sleep Latency 0.5hrs
Stage 1 9.6%
Stage 2 86.2%
Stage 3 0%
Stage 4 0%
REM 4.2%
Total Respiratory Events 43
Longest Event 34.2sec
Total Apneas 0
Hypopneas 0
RERAs 43
Respiratory Disturbance Index(RDI)
RDI (Total sleep Aps+Hypops+RERAs/hr) 14
RDI (non-REM Aps+Hypops+RERAs/hr) 15

Mean SaO2(wake) 97%
Min SaO2 (sleep) 94%
Tracheal microphone revealed no significant snoring

The diagnosis was

1. Moderate OSA
2. Low sleep efficiency associated with first night effect

They recommended CPAP Titration

Questions:

1.) Should I get the test redone? It was over a year ago.
2.) Never had the CPAP titration and was cautious of immediately doing this without a well established baseline. I felt like they were pushing the CPAP without conclusively determining I needed it. Is 50% sleep efficiency good enough to establish a diagnosis?
3.) How do they determine whether I was really sleeping in various stages they indicated?
4.) I didn't feel like I slept at all. Is it important to have a very good idea of how bad you were before the CPAP titration is done?
5.) My wife says I snore very heavily but they detected nothing. How significant is that?
6.) 15 RDI is considered borderline between minor and moderate OSA. Based on this alone should I get another study done this time making sure I am pretty sleepy before I go in?
