I believe most of the newer CPAPs have internal converters that will allow them to run on different currents internationally. However, to be on the safe side, go down to Radio Shack and they will sell you a nifty little converter with three sets of prongs (to accommodate different outlets in different countries) and that should cover all possibilities.

You can carry a letter of medical necessity signed by your physician. Perhaps you already have one, but if you don't, it should have something like the following wording:

To Whom it May Concern:

Mundo, the bearer of this letter, is a patient under my continuing care and has been diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. This disorder is being treated with a continuous positive air pressure (CPAP) device that uses air pressure as a splint to keep the airway open. The patient has been directed to use the device at all times when sleeping.

It is considered a medical necessity that the patient is allowed to use the CPAP, or an equivalent device, when sleeping or unconscious. The only reasonable exception would be if the device would interfere with critical care. Failure to use the PAP at the prescribed pressure could result in an abnormally low blood oxygen level and attendant health risk. The patient should be able to provice a copy of the pressure prescription with this letter.

Questions regarding this treatment should be directed to the undersigned.

Sincerely,

Mary Smith, M.D.

I haven't been to Egypt or Ethiopia; however, unless you're traveling to a really remote region, I wouldn't anticipate any problem with water; it seems there's bottled water everywhere you go and in a pinch, the bottled drinking water would be fine for your humidifier. Good luck and happy traveling.
