NEW to CPCAP

Posted by almanacwriter on March 14, 2008 at 13:13:42:

I hope someone can help me.

I had my sleep test on January 13th. I took over a month for the results to finally end up at my doctor’s office with many phone calls about it in between.

When I went to see my doctor he gave me phone numbers of various CPAP providers. I called several to find out costs etc and settled on one provider. My doctor faxed my prescription to the provider –he did not discuss the specific prescription with me – just said that I did indeed have sleep apnea.

After the provider received my prescription they phoned me and the first question was, “who’s providing your oxygen?” “No one,” I said, “ I don’t take oxygen. You must have me confused with someone else.” They replied that the sleep physician had noted that I said I was on so many litres of oxygen a day – NOT TRUE. Again I told them to check and make sure it was my study and not someone elses. They said it had to be mine – my name and birth date were on it.

I called my doctor and he took the oxygen out of the prescription – no one seemed to care about how the oxygen requirement got there – and refaxed the RX without the oxygen on it. I went to the CPAP seminar where each one of 5 of us had a machine, mask and accessories assigned to us and then were taught about the use of the machine.

My mask was the wrong size. Again I brought up that my sleep study might have been mixed up wth someone elses. No one cared. “Just try it,” they said.

So I did.

My machine has a heated humidifier, a nose mask with gel and a chin strap. I used boiled water in the humidifier – they said that was okay – I pushed the RAMP button and
Turned out the lights at midnight. At 3 AM I woke trying to cough and deal with blown out ear drums and the most horrific nasal passage pain I’ve ever felt. My eyes were swollen and dripping. My nose was running like a faucet and my voice was cracking. The RX air pressure setting was 18PP. I felt like I had burned out my nose and everything attached to it. I had a constant urge to sneeze and sneeze I did for the first day in amazing volume of clear watery nasal drainage. I could barely see cause my eyes were so irritated. I had my husband take me to the doctor because I could not even drive. He stopped the machine useage and is investigating the RX but the sleep study people say that they were not wrong and made no mistakes. Ten days later I still have very little speaking voice and the nose is still running although not as bad. I have been using saline spray once a day. My Dr. says I should have another test. My insurance company won’t pay for another. Does it sound to anyone like the air pressure is set way too high? I’m terrified to use the thing again. Any suggestions?
