Quite a while back somebody had a question about saltwater in their CPAP humidfier.
The person had put salt into their CPAP humidifier and had felt so much better. The person was asking if it was OK and was told that salt would ruin their machine, but they never got an answer as to why it felt better when she added the salt. I think that I finally have an answer…
It is the same reason that the air around a waterfall makes you feel good. It is the same reason that the air after a rain storm makes you feel good. It is the same reason why the beach air is great.
Water releases negative ions into the air, rain and waterfalls amplify this effect. Ocean waves crashing on the shore do the same thing. Negative ions enter our lungs and make their way to our brains. Inside the brain the negative ions help break down serotonin. Reduced serotonin levels make us more clear headed, feeling better.
Salt is very alkaline and contains many more negative ions. By adding salt to her humidifier water she was adding negative ions to her air and feeling “better”. This is why the air by the ocean is so refreshing.
It is still wrong to add salt to a CPAP humidifier, but it explains why a nasal saline rinse is a good idea before bed.
At least that is how I believe it works.
Later,
Rolling Thunder
