I don't believe it matters what you pack the equipment in; security is still going to pull you aside, take it out of the case and wipe it down with that little cloth that's supposed to detect the presence of explosives, or whatever it detects. I always carry a copy of the letter of medical necessity in case I get an argument about carry-on pieces, but I never have needed it.
