Self diagnose or croak in my sleep?

Posted by NoDocs on April 03, 2008 at 12:34:04:

Hello,

I absolutely have sleep apnea - wife tells me all the time that I stop breathing while I am aleep.

My question is, how important is it really to be seen by a doctor to be diagnosed with Sleep Apnea?

I am somewhat agoraphobic (I don't leave the house much) so this makes seeing doctors difficult and doing a sleep study even more difficult, in fact, its not going to happen.

Am I better off self-diagnosing and buying a CPAP online or risk the effects of sleep apnea for the rest of my life?

At this point I am not doing the sleep study so that's out. I either continue as I have or buy the CPAP and adjust it accordingly with my wife's help. Its just air isn't it? I am not a doctor obviously but I know I've had SA for years. Im 37 and overweight.

Curious what you think and please spare the "get your butt to the doctor" replies. Its just not happening.

How dangerous can it be to hook myself up to a CPAP without a doctors guidance?
