Sleep test inconclusive

Posted by cyclone on April 14, 2008 at 04:41:57:

Hi,

I have just been to the sleep doctor for the results of my sleep test and he said they were inconclusive due to the little sleep time (less then 2 hours) and the fact they there was virtually no deep sleep recorded. He did mention there appeared to be no sleep apnea during the time they recorded but they did record leg movements every 2 minutes so the options he gave me were

1) Treat the restless legs and see how that goes
2) repeat the sleep study to see if I can sleep a sufficeint amount of time to get a valid reading

I chose the second option, because I am not one for sitting around wondering.

In January I had gone to my primary care doctor because of lack of concentration, tremors and the fact I had felt I have gone stupid or something like that. I had complained about these issues the prior year and was referred to a psychiatrist who said I was not clinically depressed. This time my doctor had referred me to the neurologist who gave me an MRI which turned out normal but speculated my real problem was Sleep Apnea and in turn referred me to a sleep doctor. I went to the sleep doctor who told me felt that I had severe sleep apnea and I was booked in for the test at the local hospital.

It was an awful night, I took 51 minutes to get to sleep according to the results and woke up 2 hours later and never went to sleep again. I remember this because when I woke up I was very alert, and I felt there was something stopping me from going back to sleep. I was awake from 1am to the end of the test with the exception of about 5 minutes.

I tend to sleep around 7 to 7.5 hours a night but sometimes 6 and sometimes 9-10 (the 9-10 hour nights usually are on the weekends), the 6 hours 2-3 nights a month when I am working back late. I was wondering is this enough sleep.

As far as the sleep study, is it possible to have a sleep study which doesn't show mcuh apnea on the first night and when it is redone it is positive for apnea
