Trying to understand new CPAP

Posted by Accx4 on May 02, 2008 at 15:23:31:

I have the Resmed S8 Elite/H3i with quattro ff mask w/ 13cm H2O.

Last night was night 5 and for goodness sake it is working so well once you get past the mask. I figured out how to check my numbers yesterday. I am confused though and a little help understanding will be so appreciated. In the menu of efficacy data reported is

Press:
day... 12
week... 12.2

Leak
day... .08L
week... .06L

AHI
day... 13.2
week... 15.7

HI
day... 9.5
week... 13.0

AI
day... 3.7
week... 3.7

Usage 38hrs
session 0005/0007
I really don't think I can get any more leak proof than I am already. I cannot imagine when or why it is leaking and I cannot make it any tighter than it is already. Am I missing something though? Why am I still dealing with this AHI, AI, HI etc. Thought that would all be resolved. I noticed my AI for last night and for the week are both 3.7 So those probably occured last night. My HI at 13.0 for the week is still 13 an hour? My total AHI during my study I believe was 104.2 so I suppose that is a significant difference but should it be there? My HI unrtreated was 94.3 so 13 is considerably less as well.

Why is my pressure 12.2 when it is set to 13cm?
What exactly is sleep hygiene?
Would a nasal only mask be more beneficial than full face?
Is the chin strap to keep you from breathing through your mouth if you do use a nasal only interface?
I hear so many refer to someone as their sleep doc. IS there such a thing? I just have a PCP who gives referrals to this place and that. Of course I am in the military still but either way... shouldn't there be someone in this chain I can nail with the hard questions?
Where the menu shows sessions 0005/0007 what are the 2 different categories on the S8 elite?
Is the purpose of CPAP to allow the increase of O2 saturation throughout the night? Or to stop the gasping etc.
Why is CPAP the only remedy I have been approached with? I mean it is working I think (i guess) but is it all there is?
What happens next? Do I have to make future appointments to discuss this subject with what ever primary care physician I may have at any given time as my insurance changes and that pcp is no longer a provider? I mean how are you supposed to manage this? Is there some kind of schedule to follow?
Do I just use this thing for the next 50 years and don't be a bother? That is how it was treated... Here you go... Have a nice life... you're fixed... Next!
Who's chops do I bust when I need to? the PCP, the DME supplier? The Resp therapist that set up my equip? Instructions Anyone got Instructions?

I cannot believe they just give you this thing and expect everything to be just honkey dorey! Where is the follow up? I at least got a call back from the car dealer when I bought a car... I had the sleep study, they gave me the Macheeen.... Its been a week.... 51 more to the first year I suppose... Then what... 49 more just keep doing it? There has to be a better way...

I am successfully sleeping better feeling awesome all day. Barely get sleepy even working alone in a quiet office and getting up at 0230. So Really I have little to complain about. I keep praying the bridge of my nose gets used to the pressure from the mask. but outside of that I like it ok. Its like having my own cool breeze and I can pull the covers over my head so that the kids and the wife don't sit there and laugh at me when I am asleep and they are scrounging through my wallet looking for lunch money etc. I really hate how this thing looks. I'd rather it be incorporated into a rubber mask of Ronald Regan or Freddy Krueger or even look like a deep sea or space helmet... Maybe A darth vader head or sponge bob for all I care... It would only be better than fat ol me with messy headgear hair and a double chin looking like an icu patient in a forgotten hallway... At least my wife can sleep again. Poor baby has been sleeping with ear plugs for so long. Well this is sounding like a RANT now and I am not here to do that. Please... Any answers will be appreciated... That last set were book answers and fairly hard to understand how it applies to me.
