Sorry, nobody on the internet (or over the internet) can tell you exactly what might be happening with your sleep, even though you give a detailed description. But since some weird things are starting to happen more often, it would be a good first step to take a sleep test (questionnaire) such as this one http://www.sleepnet.com/sleeptest.html You can find other similar tests on the internet by doing a search on the key words 'sleep test questionnaire'

You didn't mention this, but having scary dreams frequently or being fearful of going to sleep might be a sign that you should have a proper sleep test in a clinic to rule out something such as sleep apnea. It wouldn't be fortunate to find out you have sleep apnea, but if you take care of it now, your life will be a whole lot better in the future.
