Thanks for the information-I can't arrange to spend enough time in other places to really get much of an idea how I'd function in the long term in most of them, and things like this can be helpful. I found my "fibro" symptoms disappeared totally in Hawaii, which is quite a bit warmer than all parts of coastal California, although the rain and fog made my arthritic feet hurt quite a bit too; not as bad as home. Maybe the additional heat of coastal or southern Mexico can get around that--I dream about places like Costa Rica (my wife works for sea turtle protection and has professional contacts there) and India (I was something of a specialist in Indian culture and religion prior to becoming ill, and have considered the possibility of trying to get a diplomatic or academic posting there, but with my health history, and being 57, that's a long shot). Tucson treats me very well when I visit there, but I have a hard time finding the beach thus far, and somebody hid all the trees, or else pulled off the leaves and stuck toothpicks all over; I'd probably get used to the topography eventually. Palm Springs is O.K. as long as you stay indoors--they've covered every inch of the Coachella Valley with houses and golf courses, and the nights get cold in the high desert nearby, which is not for me!
It ain't scientific--but I find myself wondering if my ancestors' 200 years in the American South prior to my birth didn't weed out the people who were more attuned to Northern European weather. Or else I require the four seasons I knew as a young child back East; the forty-to-fifty degree temperature drop we can often get here on a foggy summer evening after a warm day feels positively unnatural to me. I sometimes just lie in bed and pray when I know the fog is going to come in at a later time! Such wonderful summer memories of being a kid in Union City, Tennessee, at night after the air conditioner was shut off and you could hear cicadas the size of avocados banging into the windowscreen....
