CPAP first night, Exausted !

Posted by daldei on July 10, 2008 at 04:11:43:

First off hello ! Its nice to find a forum about SA. I have been reading past posts so my experience doesnt seem a-typical. I just thought I'd post my first night experience then maybe in a few weeks again so future new viewers can see how things change. Or maybe someone has some advise.

I'm 44, somewhat overweight (6'2" and 280lb) and have had bad snooring problems the last 4 years. Two friends and 2 relatives have has SA diagnose and are on CPAP and all of them are very happy they did it and suggested my snoring might be due to SA. In fact my uncle recently has gotten off CPAP because he doesnt need it anymore. Of course I didnt belive them, and the thought of having to use a CPAP machine was almost terrifying ... but I talked to my doctor and he recommended a "Apnea Link" test which then lead to sleep studies and sure enough I have prety bad SA (I think it says 48 apneas / hour ).

So ... 6 months later I finally come home with a CPAP machine. Amazing how long it takes and how many people are involved for something that the "Apnea Link" test showed 6 months back ... but oh well, I guess everyone wants some piece of the insurnace $ ...

My machine is setup to auto-adjust between 6 and 12. I'm wearing a nose mask, I couldnt stand the ones that plugged directly into my nostrals.

At the last sleep study I had a really hard time sleeping, probably only got 3 hours all night but I was hoping at home it would be different. It was a lot better at home, but I was optimistically hoping for a miracle :)
Took me about 2 hours to get to sleep then I woke up about 1 and couldnt sleep for another 2 hours, then who knows I was dreaming about not getting to sleep ... a couple times I woke up with my nose itching awfully .. cant scratch it inside that mask! ... Tried turning down the humidity that seemed to help.
finally at 5 am I find I can hardly breath, I have moderate alergies and by morning my nose is typically stuffed so I took off the CPAP and slept 'normalaly' until 7 and had to get up.

This morning I am Exausted! I feel like I stayed up all night. I know others have reported this and I'm hopeful I'll get used to and atleast get to the point where I'm as rested as without CPAP ... lets hope !
On the bright side, my wife said I didnt snore once all night, which is amazing because I usually can be heard across all 2 stories and 5 rooms of the house. (I have recordings so I know they arent lying :)
I just wish I wernt so tired ...
