Posted by dontra on July 17, 2008 at 11:47:34:Hello I am new to the forum. This is about my husband. He had an overnight sleep study done 7-12-08. My confusion and his is that he had a very hard time going to sleep at the clinic. He slept a total of 2 hrs. 37 mins. I had to be there to pick him up at 5:45 am. He was sleeping when I arrived and I thought that they would allow him to continue to sleep. You know since it took him forever to go to sleep. The technician said no we have to wake him. I of course said no let him sleep so you can see what happens. During this short sleep that he had he experienced many episodes. His worst was 4 minutes before they woke him up. They were supposed to do a split study but there wasn't enough time. So, I called on Monday morning and politely complained about the situation. Now he is scheduled to go back to the sleep clinic this Saturday night to have the rest of the study completed. They will put him on the CPAP machine and adjust pressure and so forth. He has an appointment with the Doc tomorrow to review last Saturdays results. I never realized how many machines, masks and other appliances exists. My question is the no mask set up is it effective. He wears a night guard in his mouth anyway or are the other masks more effective? I have been trying to get him to have the sleep study done for a good 25 years now. Yes that long and finally his doctor suggested it and he agreed. The types of episodes he has vary. Sometimes when he wakes up he has been without air so long that he just jumps up and takes off. Basically doing whatever he can to to try to breathe. Other times it sounds as though he is choking and like he is having a hard time breathing in and out. It looks like he is working so hard and he is always exhausted. Lately when he is out of air he starts kicking and punching. I jump up of course and wake him from a distance with a pillow or something. The next morning he has no memory of it what so ever, even though he says I am awake and OK. He still doesn't remember it.This time of the day is the worst. He just can't stay awake. He needs to be at the sleep clinic now while he is sleepy. I am just having information overload I think. I have been reading and researching a lot so I guess it is understandable. I printed out the sleep terms, definintions, and abbreviations to familiarize myself. I am trying hard to get well informed. Any input from the forum is more than welcomed. Thank you for listening. I think I am as tired as he is. I don't sleep well due to listening and remaining aware while trying to sleep.
Thanks, Emma
