Central Apnea - AntiDepres. Caused?

Posted by dars on July 20, 2008 at 12:20:04:

I think I may have a strange case. I was originally tested and diagnosed with "mild" sleep apnea in early 2005. I have been off and on the CPAP for the last 3 years with what seemed to be only partial relief under a variety of settings and masks. My wife and I have been convinced for some time that I have central sleep apnea due to my nonrandom pattern primarily in sleep beginning and early morning "pre-waking" hours. Heavy breath, medium breath, shallow breath, none for 13 seconds, repeat. I found it hard to convince my sleep doctors of such but finally got to take another sleep study 2 weeks ago. Mild apnea with ONLY centrals was found. It was at that point my sleep doctor referred to my original 2005 sleep study from another sleep facility and found that central was in play at that time as well.

I now have a copy of my sleep study summaries and would certainly share them for further expert opinion.

The timing of all this back to 2005 seems to correspond to a short time (months to 1 year) of my beginning a certain TYPE of antidepressant that I had not previously been on. Since then about 2 years ago, due to insurance changes I switched to another specific AD of the same type. The AD's are Effexor then Cymbalta. I was not prescribed them for apnea but for depression and have been on other types in the past without knowledge of central apnea symptoms. However, since starting these types (I think SSRI's) I believe the central developed.

I am now, after telling my primary physician and his agreeing, trying to slowly taper off this medication and after 3 days of 1/2 dose of previous, I SEEM to sense a reduction in central events but its very early, I am biased, and I best not say that is even near sure yet.

My question - Has anyone heard of an AD being the CAUSE of Central sleep apnea? Not an aggravator, the root cause.

Regards,

David in TN
