Posted by thattoddlintown on July 23, 2008 at 14:10:30:Hi all!
I recently received the results of my sleep study. I am 33 and a few pounds overweight. I used to be a really bad snorer, but that has slowly degenerated into sleep apnea. Every night, I choke myself awake multiple, multiple times during the process of falling asleep, plus awake for the same reason several times throughout the night. I am pretty exhausted during the day, and have developed a steady constant anxiety/panic attacks that I KNOW is due in part to false suffocation being associated by my body with any moment I get or am tired. I also had OCD/panic attacks/anxiety onset at about 25 years of age, but with some behavioral therapy, that has gotten better. I drink heavily 2-3 times per week, and smoke maybe 5 cigarettes per week.
I had trouble sleeping during the sleep study, thus they pretty much deemed the results "Sub-optimal" and want me to return for another one, where I use a CPAP at some point during the night (I assume to determine if it would help). They recorded 6 apnea/hypopnea events per hour, 18 REM apnea/hypopnea events per hour, coupled with a Percent time 02 Saturdation of < 91%. I was wondering, where do these numbers fall on the spectrum of sleep apnea severity in any of your experience? The symptoms, even though the data sample was too small they said to draw a final conclusion, were signifigant in their opinion.
I also have very large tonsils (as does my father, who had them out at 19), which I have read can be a contributing factor (I can just feel them taking up too much space in my throat!). Anyone know the prevalance of tonsillectomy as a treatment? If a CPAP works, do you think they would recommend I stick with that rather than having my tonsils removed?
Anyway, this forum is great and has been extremely informative, as I undertake this process. Thanks to everyone who contributes! A decent night's sleep wished to all!
Thanks for any opinions, thoughts, etc.
