Generally, the train fare will be significantly more than air fare. That is the way it is in Canada. Don't know about USA. Usually the key with rail travel is that you must book in advance.

I think a big factor will be if you book a sleeper. They are expensive.

Which route are you planning on taking through Canada. If you go west, i recommend the "rocky mountaineer" which goes through the rockies. Very scenic.
