Sounds like you have sleep apnea. It is called sleep apnea syndrome when it get to where it causes daytime sleepiness. It progresses as we age so as time passes you may start feeling the effects.

If you believe it is only happening 3-5 times a night due to awakenings, it doesn't mean that is all that is happening. Most of the time we don't wake up unless it is a very long event.

If you have mild OSA you may be able to treat it with an oral device. It would be worth having a sleep study just to see how severe it truly is. Better to treat it early than to wait until it is causing major problems.
