Posted by IrishBoy on August 19, 2008 at 08:42:39:Hello,
I am scheduled for my follow visit with my MD soon and was wondering if I could get some advice from this excellent community. I am 40 years old, 6' tall, 275 lbs, BMI 37.3 (previously very fit age 10-35, last 5 years have been tough I will admit with travel and kids etc..!)The Sleep Study lasted 760 mins, total sleep time 413, sleep efficiency 92%. 174 Obstructive Sleep Apnea and 65 Hypopneas, AHI Index = 34.7 %
22 % of sleep time was in the supine position, supine AHI 42.4 %, non-supine index 32.4. The RDI was 34 events per hour of sleep.Lowest Oxygen saturation was 77%, and 2.3 % of sleep time was at saturation lower than 90%.
Pulse rate was 79 beats per min. Periodic leg movements, 27 total. PLM Index was 3.8 per hour.
Final Diagnosis : Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea ICD 327.23.
My question boils down to .. how severe is this ? I travel 80% both across the USA and overseas and the thought of hauling a CPAP machine through security at airports is not appealing.. If I commit to losing 70 lbs, ensure 8 hours per night of sleep time and improve sleeping posture .. can I improve this situation or I am too severe for a non-CPAP solution.
For someone who was very fit and healthy for the first 40 years of my life I am very concerned about this... perhaps this is the final "kick in the pants" catalyst to get back in shape and to avoid ALCOHOL at all costs.
Any advice or counsel is much appreciated during this process.
Thank you in advance,
IrishBoy USA
