Many people with OSA go to their docs complaining of insomnia. OSA can cause a big problem getting to sleep and staying asleep.
With OSA you do sleep, and with some patients, the majority of their sleep occurs while they are not breathing. Some patients will wake up after the event and have trouble getting back to sleep. Some will wake briefly and go back to sleep and stop breathing. In most cases the brief awakenings or arousal's to breath are not remembered in the morning.
With OSA patients who wake up and have trouble getting back to sleep tend to complain of insomnia. Once the OSA is treated the insomnia typically goes away. In some cases the patient will have more than one disorder and insomnia can continue. In some of these cases a second study may be necessary after the patient has had time to adjust to effective cpap treatment and are still having problems sleeping not related to using cpap.
Best wishes,
