Riv, referencing the question you asked in your post: auto adjusting machines monitor your breathing breath by breath and can tell when an apnea might be coming on. The pressure then ramps up to prevent this from happening, keeping the airway open. So, an apena doesn't happen and no apnea gets recorded. That's how these machines work, and in a way of speaking, it sounds like that was the point the dr was making. However, sometimes central apneas can't be treated by PAP and they get recorded on the data, as well as hypopneas that might be central in nature. Overall, an AHI of 5 or less down from 21 is good. If you're now doubting that your test results that show the 21 AHI are authentic, you could get a copy of the sleep study and check the date and time and other info on the report to verify that it was you in the bed that night? How did you get into a sleep dr for an appointment though? Usually a person is having some problems that are investigated by a GP or internist before an appointment is scheduled in a lab or with a sleep doc.
