Holding one's breath in response to tense situations is a common habit. I wasn't aware I did it until a friend once interrupted our conversation with a sharp command to "Breathe!" In response to my startled silence, she said, "You were holding your breath. You gotta learn to keep breathing." So becoming more aware of those moments when you hold your breath and then consciously quieting yourself and breathing deeply helps. Perhaps yoga or some type of meditation that focuses on breathing would help? As I understand it, central apneas are rare. My best to you.
