What I did to become compliant due to severe claustropobia and the sleepless nights at first:
1.) I concur, don't use ramp or AUTO mode at first. I started on BiPap (at higher pressures than you ...at 18/16) in AUTO Mode; however, I felt like I was always "waiting" for the AUTO mode to increase pressure. My 90% pressure in IPAP was around 20; thus, constant leaks and other issues (now leave mine at 17.5 IPAP and AHI running 3 - 4, but is bearable and the constant pressure with not much drop-off on EPAP, 16, isn't that noticeable).
2.) I too was very desperate at first. I wouldn't hesitate to inquire about other medications to help w/ compliance. I was put on .5 mg Clonazapem at bedtime for a couple of months (started at 10 days into it due to not being able to wear mask only a few minutes a night and ripping it off - much like yourself). The first night on the med. was much better. Definitely took care of the anxiety and allowed to get to sleep. Don't be concerned about dependence...I weaned off after 3 months w/ no problems. Antihistimines can also be helpful. If you do medicate; however, be sure to always sleep w/ your machine - most of these med's exacerbate your apnea...
3.) If it's only been a few weeks, you should be able to get different kinds of masks from your DME or sleep doc? Maybe try several different interface types.
4.) Boy, it's a good thing they diffent settings on the humidifier..some don't use it, so max it out. I pretty much leave mine on 4 and now never get the "gurgling" in my hose; although I did af first?? I sleep w/ a full-face; thus, really helps with dry-mouth.
Hang in there!
