Posted by gerryk on November 30, 2008 at 05:06:29:I am finally back on CPAP. I had a sleep study done over 5 years ago and was put on CPAP. I had a terrible time finding a full face mask that would not leak when I wore it. I also tried nasal but because of my terrible allergies that wasn't an option. I even went as far as having surgery on the turbinates in my nose the doc said this will cure your nose breathing problem. After that didn't work he wanted to do other surgery with no guarantees. I was switched to an auto titrating machine because I was having problems exhaling against the pressure of 18. The machine never went above 12 and I was still having problems with the mask leaking. I finally gave up.
Jump ahead 5 years. I quit smoking after smoking 25 years. My weight jumped from 185 to 215 and I was exhausted all day long. My wife complained about my snoring and stopping breathing and I had permanent bruises on my side from her hitting me when I stopped breathing throughout the night.
I went for my regular yearley physical for work. I am a firemen and we go for a complete physical every year. My doctor said I needed to be on CPAP and asked me to go back on it. I needed another studay because my doctor wanted me on a BiPap machine.
I had the study done, got the order for the BiPap machine and got a mask. I have already posted on the mask. It is the first mask I have been able to wear that the seal doesn't leak the swivel does. I can deal with that at least it isn't blowing in my eyes.
My new BiPap machine because of my sleep apnea, weight gain and allergies is set at 20 and 16. Originally the ramp pressure was set at 6 and I had to raise that up to 8 because I felt like I was suffocating while falling asleep.
I am still waking up at night and sometimes taking the mask off or adjusting it, but as soon as I realize I took it off I put it back on and lay back down. I wake up as few as once or as much as five times a night. I have only been on the new maching for a couple weeks, but I am feeling better in the morning.
I hope this post will help some of the new people to CPAP therapy and encourage them to not give up as it takes a little time it's not instantaneous.
